The Key to a Successful Server Migration

As your company's IT systems become more and more efficient, you should consider transferring data to a stronger or more specialized server. Server migration has become a vital part of today's IT world, as clients expect quick deployments and minimum downtime. Understanding how efficiently you can execute a server migration will help determine the growth and opportunity for your operation in the future.

Today we'll be covering the core principals of a successful server migration.

What is Server Migration?
In simplest terms, server migration is the process of transferring data from one server to another. This could be done for a variety of reasons, including safety concerns, outdated servers, or equipment failures. Server migration can only be performed by technical experts that understand how to move data without causing unplanned downtime.

It's important to note that some data may be unavailable during this process, so it's imperative to map out the server migration completely before starting. Carelessness may lead to unplanned data loss.

Plan Properly
When cooking up a migration plan, you need to have a specific goal in mind. Most businesses want to upgrade their servers for better performance, virtualization, or increased web traffic. Some wish to switch to less expensive servers in order to cut costs. Whatever the reason, you then need to find the right hosting plan. Remember, the most expensive server isn't necessarily the best options, consider virtualization and leasing options.

Have your IT team review every shred of data that needs to be migrated, and check if any of its needs to be reformatted. You should always have a backup of the original server. Pick a time for the migration where there's the least amount of traffic on your servers. Map out your processes to the new IP address and you should be good to go.

Types of Server Migrations
• Virtual Server Migration - This occurs when you move the server's physical resources, like its operating system, files, and applications, to a different virtual machine hosted on a virtualized platform.
• Mail Server Migration - The process in which all emails, contacts, and other tasks is extracted and moved to one email host to another.
• Cloud Server Migration -  When all business systems, data, and applications from an organization's on-premises computer is transported to a cloud environment.
